INTERVIEW: Billy Martin of Good Charlotte talks fan-driven new record Generation Rx

good charlotte billy martin

We'll be like 'okay man what are we suppose to do? And he'll say, 'man, this is an important record so you really need to do something that will make people go wow this is cool and different and something new'. So Don kept challenging us to try new things until eventually we came up with a lot of songs that he felt really strong about. But we’re always looking for new vibes and energy.

That instinct has served Good Charlotte, who initially burst onto the scene as part of the late-Nineties pop-punk explosion, quite well. For some reason I'm not sure what it is with people in our band, maybe it's because they don't understand and hate that so many kids love our band? I always think a lot of it is due to jealousy or whatever. I'm doing what I've dreamed of doing and obviously there are tons of kids around the world who love our band and what we do which is why we're making music in the first place. Good Morning Revival in general, as a title, is supposedly to represent a fresh kind of starting over. We took a break and got back to normal lives and now we feel rejuvenated and have made a record we're really proud of.

“1979” was another song that’s been around since the beginning demo stages. I think any of the songs that made it through multiple producers and made from demo to record back to demo, back to the record again, those are strong songs. We really tried to take the best of all our previous records and combine it to make the record that fans that love any of our records could listen to this one and be into. Not really super conscience; it just seemed like the right thing to do. I’m not sure, because he is the same producer as our last record, which I think sounds the least like our first record.

Myspace profiles blasting synthy, hip-hop-leaning pop punk have to be in the mix, right? The rise and fall of our favorite social media platform aside, Jakkyboí is pretty representative of a scene dream come true. So, it only makes sense that he’d have the Good Charlotte touch present within his discography. If “I Just Got The Feeling That You’re Gonna Waste My Time” feels particularly familiar to you, it’s because it’s yet another track on Martin’s roster. This time we shifted things around and because every song was different, we'd just play whatever part was needed.

Shudder to Think Look Back on 1994’s ‘Pony Express Record’

“I’m just thankful that this many years later that people still care and people are still giving us a chance to do what we love doing and I appreciate and we’re thankful for it,” he shared. There’s no doubt he’s entirely genuine in saying so. Good Charlotte still care, they very much do, and so do their fans.

Good Charlotte’s fifth studio album Cardiology will be released on November 2. For all the latest news on the band, check out their website. I know when we were young, it would have been great to see that stuff from bands that we loved, but it just wasn’t there. That’s something I always grew up thinking I would be. I love drawing, it’s definitely an important part of my life. I got to do all the artwork for Chronicle (Chronicles of Life and Death) and direct one of the videos.

MADDEN My main guitar was a John Suhr Bengal [Burst] Tele. And then I had a Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Standard. I did the rhythm tracks with a Sol-dano Hot Rod 100 and a Laney Ironheart, and I had an early Nineties Matchless that I used for a lot of the cleaner, more chime-y stuff. And I have a few pedals, but I prefer to use just straight amp distortion as much as possible.

It’s definitely a lot more in line with say, that ‘Predicitable’ era than maybe some of the stuff we did afterwards. With Martin’s children’s book set for release in the fall, an opening spot on the biggest pop-star in the world’s tour and a brand new full-time fifth member, the boys from Good Charlotte indeed enjoy trying new things. That is, as long as there aren’t any horns around. After over ten years of being in a band, Martin and the rest of Good Charlotte have seen it all. So when a tour like this came around, Martin and his bandmates knew it wouldn’t bring anything the boys haven’t heard or seen before.

Interview with Billy Martin—the Serendipitous Life

It’s one of those songs, pretty much saying how music is really important to a lot of people, us, our fans. How many people rely on music in their lives to get them through situations or relate to something. There was never a doubt that that wasn’t going to be the first song on the record. Joe Matera recently caught up with Good Charlotte guitarist (and part-time keyboard player) Billy Martin for an exclusive UG interview to chat about the new album, success and drummers. Another sign of maturity on Good Morning is the band’s first ever collaborative effort on record with “The River”.

We originally started out doing this album with Howard Benson producing. He came in and picked a few demos out that he thought was strong and told us that we needed to keep working. We got about halfway through the guitar and then we started doing vocals on some of the songs, and realized it just didn’t sound like we wanted it to. It was missing a lot of the heart and the soul that the demos had. Close your eyes and revert back to your 2005 self.

We always feel so welcome and there’s so many fans all over the world who don’t get a chance to see a band. We always go back to all those countries like Indonesia, Singapore or South America. We just went to Russia a couple months ago for the first time. The record comes out in November, we’ll do a couple scattered shows in the US for promotion, then to Australia for a show.

Next year we’re going to Europe in January/February. I think we’re hoping to do the Christmas radio shows around America, the radio stations do their Jingle Bash or whatever they call them. We’re hoping to do a handful of those around the holidays.

One thing that hasn’t turned into a disaster on stage is Martin’s band’s surprising opening slot on pop-megastar Justin Timberlake’s Future Sex/Love Show tour that has only recently made its way back to North America. While many die-hard Good Charlotte fans may have been scratching their heads at such a venture, Martin claims a lot of the planning came naturally, considering that he and his bandmates love to — remember — try new things. 2002's The Young and the Hopeless sold 4.9 million copies and thrust the band into mainstream popularity. The band's breakthrough single, titled "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous", topped both pop and rock charts around the globe.
